Triple Crown Sports North East Closer 18U Tournament - 11/10/07 thru 11/11/07 - North Branford, CT.

LONG ISLAND ASTROS FINISH IN 2nd PLACE

Astros 16U club end their 2007 season with a 2nd place finish in the TCS hosted "Northeast Closer" 18U Tournament in FREEZING North Branford, CT. The boys play well in sweeping their way to a perfect 3-0 record before meeting the CT. Angels in the Championship game and losing a hard fought 8-5 ballgame. Zach Root leads the way with 5 hits and a .500 average while delivering 6 RBI which includes a mammoth 3 run homer! Mark Sargente delivers 4 hits with 3 clutch RBI and a nice win on the mound! Zach Badanes uncorks some big hits and leads the team with 7 RBI in 4 games while hitting .300 in the tournament. The most solid pitching in the tournament comes from Steve Pesapane who throws a shutout in the opener and totals 12 K's with an ERA of 1.00 in 2 outings. Great job by all the boys in our year-end Closer in North Branford.

The Astros are off and running behind the superb pitching of Steve Pesapane who goes the distance for the shutout while allowing 3 hits and striking out 7. Mark Sargente delivers both Astros hits while driving home 2 as Mike Sorbara drives home a run on a sac fly and Zach Badanes draws a bases loaded walk, not much hitting but we get the job done with solid pitching and defense.

The Astros jump out early with 5 1st inning runs behind a 3 run double by Zach Root and a 2 run single by Zach Badanes, both hits coming with 2 out!!! We add 3 more runs in the 2nd inning behind a run scoring single by PJ Lenz and then another 2 out 2 run single by Zach "Mr. Clutch" Badanes. The boys coast home from there behind the pitching of WP Mark Sargente (5 IP/ 3 hits / 6 K) as we defeat Leftys Lightning by the score of 10-2 in a 5 inning run-rule win!

Game 3 - Astros 5 RI Orioles 2  WP PJ Lenz

The #1 seeded Astros face the Orioles in the semi-final game behind PJ Lenz, PJ gets the job done as he goes the distance and puts the Astros in the Championship game! The Orioles score both runs against PJ in the 1st inning, PJ settles down from there and allows nothing the rest of the way!!! The Astros answer the Orioles in the bottom half of the 1st inning and put up a 3 spot as Mark Sargente doubles home a run and Vinnie Carminati delivers home the go-ahead run on a fielders choice. Felix Guzman gets a run home on an infield out and Zach Root adds an RBI single to close out the scoring. Way to go boys! Onto the championship game!

Game 4 - CT Angels 8 Astros 5  LP Felix Guzman

The Astros fall behind 4-0 in the first inning and then close it to 4-3 as Zach Rootie Root blasts a clutch 3 run homer in the 4th inning, the Angels rally for 3 unearned runs in the 5th inning but the boys come right back and put 2 runs back on the board as Zach Badanes delivers a 2 run single to make it a 7-5 ballgame after 6 innings. The Astros are unable to close the gap from there and lose a hard fought ballgame by the score of 8-5 in taking home the runner-up trophy in the 18U NE Closer Tournament. All in all an excellent effort by the entire team in tough weather conditions in Freezing North Branford, CT.
