2007 ripken tidal wave tournament

Ripken Experience 16U "Tidal Wave" Tournament - 7/8/07 thru 7/13/07 - Myrtle Beach, SC

The boys compete in the Ripken hosted Tidal Wave Tournament down in Myrtle Beach, SC on 7/8 - 7/13. We finish in 3rd place overall while losing a tough 5-4 ballgame in our semi-final match-up versus Liberty Select from MO. as they rally for 4 runs with 2 out in the 6th inning and earn the right to play in the championship game vs the Ohio Trojans. Amongst the highlights from the week are PJ Lenz winning the homerun derby as well as our team winning the "Bean Bob" competition as we take home 2/3 events in the skills competition, great job boys! All in all the team has a fantastic time as the event is well run and accommodations top-notch. Please read on for composite team stats and game summaries. Thanks!

The Astros start off on the right foot with a nicely played ballgame versus a scrappy squad from Delaware in a 3-2 victory. Zach Badanes (3 IP / 1 hit) picks up the W in relief of PJ Lenz who throws the opening 4 frames. Ryan Rusoff (2 hits) drills the game winning single in the 6th inning to put the boys ahead to stay. Captain Cam Maron delivers 3 hits (2B) and Max Tecce singles & doubles in his 3 AB's. Nice way to start boys!

The boys fall behind early rally in the middle innings and then give it up late in a 13-3 loss versus the Cavs from Maryland, the game was much closer than the score indicates as we trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. Aside from the 2 run double from PJ Lenz which made it a 4-3 ballgame in the 5th inning there really is nothing else to report here.

We rebound nicely in game 3 and dominate a club from Cincy as Mike Bergman throws 2 hit ball over 4 innings for the W and Adam Binder K's 8 in a 3 inning stint to pick-up the save. At the dish Ryan Rusoff continues to swing a hot stick as he singles 3 times and drives home 2 runs in a clinic like performance! Zach Root doubles home a run and Mike Bergman adds an RBI single as well in a much needed victory.

In a pivotal ballgame the Astros do what they have to in beating the Exeter team in a close ballgame which is called official after 6 innings due to the time limit being exceeded. Junior Fair picks up the W and PJ Lenz the S as he strikes out all 3 batters in the last inning! Max Tecce gets the job done in the leadoff hole with 3 singles (RBI) while Vinny Carminati doubles twice and singles in his 3 plate appearances while driving home 2 runs! PJ Lenz singles & doubles while Mike Bergman singles & triples and the boys mash 13 hits all total in a 6-5 victory.

WOW! The boys come out with a vengeance and spank the Cavs team 10-2 while avenging a loss to this same team earlier in the tournament! The team play their best game as we move onto the semi-final round! PJ Lenz is dominant and comes up huge in a must win ballgame! Great work PJ on a hot and humid day, this is what guts are made of everyone! Dylan Harmon sets the table at the top with 4 walks in 4 plate appearances as Zach Root & PJ Lenz each single & double with 2 RBI each and Vinny Carminati doubles home 2 runs as well. My, my, my.........The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! The Astros play a marvelous ballgame all the way around and lose a tough decision as the Liberty Select team from Missouri rally for 4 runs in the bottom half of the 6th inning to steal away our championship hopes in a stunning 5-4 defeat. Mike Bergman does all that he can do in a valiant effort in giving it everything he got as we take a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning. Taking nothing away from an extremely talented Liberty Select team who battled hard and persevered, we all felt as if we were a more deserving team on this particular day. In any case, GREAT job by everyone as we end up winning 4 of 7 games and finish a very respectable 3rd in a great tournament!
