NABF High School World Series - Lynchburg, VA. 7/24/08 thru 7/27/08
Astros 2008 17U team compete in the NABF High School World Series in Lynchburg, VA. finishing 2nd in their bracket after winning 2 of 3 pool games. The boys advance to the single elimination Championship round of 16 and lose a tough 1-0 ballgame to Baseball U out of NJ. The team represents Long Island, NY well while also knowing that a break here or a break there and we could have very easily went much further in this event. Game 1 - Astros 12 Heritage 3 WP Jared Mancini
The Astros get off to a roaring start and lead in this one by the score of 8-1 after 3 innings winning by the score of 12-3 over Heritage (VA). Jared Mancini picks up the W with 5 solid innings on the mound as Ryan Rusoff singles twice, walks 3 times and scores 3 runs in his 5 AB's. Dylan Harmon (RBI) and Vinnie Carminati (3B) also add 2 hits as Cam Maron and Zach Root each drive home 2 runs in the opening game victory!
Game 2 - Astros 9 Salisbury 2 WP Zach Badanes
The Astros jump out with 5 runs in the 1st inning and don't look back from there in a 9-2 victory over Salisbury (NC). Zach Badanes throws a brilliant game while allowing 6 hits and 2 runs in the complete game victory. Cam Maron leads the offensive barrage with 3 hits and an RBI while Dylan Harmon and PJ Lenz add 2 hits apiece.
Game 3 - Troy 8 Astros 6 LP Eric Kotin
The Astros take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd but Troy (OH) comes right back with 7 runs in their half of the 2nd as the Astros don't help matters with 3 errors in the nightmarish inning. The Astros hang tough while rallying for 4 runs in the 4th but ultimately fall by the score of 8-6 in our worst game of the tournament as we commit 5 costly errors. Jared Mancini delivers 3 hits (2B), Zach Root 2 hits and an RBI as Cam Maron adds a 2 run single in our 4 run 4th inning, the boys battled back but just couldn't overcome the poor defensive lapse.
Game 4 - Baseball U 1 Astros 0 LP Dylan Harmon
The Astros and Baseball U (NJ) hook up in a pitchers duel as the game remains scoreless thru 4 innings. In the 5th a fly ball to right field is lost in the lights and Baseball U takes advantage as the runner advances to 3rd and scores on a sac fly, game set match!!! The boys deserved a better fate here, especially Dylan Harmon who pitched his heart out while allowing 5 hits, striking out 2 and allowing no walks. The Astros had opportunities but were unable to plate nary a run. Kudos to Steve Pesapane (LF) and Zach Badanes (3B) who played brilliant defense behind their ace on the mound.
