THE TEAM GOT OFF TO A SLOW START AT 3-8 BUT FINISHED UP STRONG GOING 12-3-1 (INCLUDING THE PLAYOFFS). IT WAS A PLEASURE COACHING THIS FINE GROUP OF YOUNG MEN AND SPECIAL THANKS TO MY ASSISTANTS PHIL LENZ AND STEVE MALIN. 2011 Long Island Astros College team (BELOW) participate in NABF College Classic Tournament in Bowie, Maryland 7/1/11 - 7/4/11. The team shows well winning 3 of 4 pool games on Saturday & Sunday before losing in the semi-finals on Monday 7/4/11 to the LI Sound. Anthony Mazzella leads the way with 10 RBI and 2 monster HR's, Vinnie Carminati and Danny Muller contribute 9 hits apiece and pitchers Zach Badanes, Jared Mancini and Andrew Alesi each throw complete game gems! The team plays extremely competitive baseball winning 2 games before being eliminated in the double-elimination format on Thursday 8/12. The boys beat teams from Chicago and Columbus (OH) but are eliminated by the 2009 AAABA Champs from New Orleans in a wild 19-14 ballgame. The Astros other loss came at the hands of Baltimore who were crowned 2010 AAABA tournament Champs on Saturday 8/14. CLICK HERE for full tournament recap.
Long Island Astros 2010 College (19U) Summer recap - The LI Astros compile an overall record of 43-20 (3 ties) over the 2010 summer season. The LI Astros FABL College team finish up with a 15-9 (1 tie) record in 2nd place while splitting their 4 game playoff series. The LI Astros BOS College team are division champs with a sparkling 20-3 (1 tie) record! The team wins July 4th tournament hosted by RYO PAL/BOS winning all 3 tournament games. The team competes in Bellefonte Showdown in Bellefonte, PA winning a game, tying a game and losing 2 grueling 1 run games. The team wins AAABA regional in Brooklyn on Saturday 7/24 defeating the Kent Whitesox 2 games to none behind the solid pitching of Jared Mancini and Zach Badanes in 3-2 and 11-1 complete game victories. We are finalists in the NABF regional qualifier, RYO-BOS July 4th and Baseball Heaven Columbus Day tournaments. We are semi-finalists in the Boys of Summer League and finalists in the LI Connie Mack League. Our 4 year team captain Camden Maron is drafted by the NY Mets in June reporting to rookie ball where he hits over .300! MARK SARGENTE COMES UP HUGE WITH THE GAME WINNING HIT AS HE SINGLES HOME MIKE SORBARA WHO LEADS OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE 6TH INNING WITH A WALK AND STOLEN BASE. Long Island Astros 2009 18U team win 5 consecutive tournaments starting with Disney's "New Years Classic" in January and follow that up with a victory down in Myrtle Beach, SC winning the Ripken Experience "Presidents Day Challenge" in February 09'. The boys follow those tournament wins with a perfect showing in the Glen Cove Memorial Day Tournament in May and then sweep thru the best PA & MD have to offer and win in Aberdeen, MD in June. Congratulations to the Long Island Astros 18U Connie Mack team on a valiant effort in their bid for the Long Island Connie Mack League Championship. The boys come up a wee bit short and fall to the Long Island A's 2 games to none in 2 tough losses that could have very well gone either way. On Friday 8/7 the Astros lose a 2-1 decision in 8 innings as Zach Badanes strikes out 18 A's in a fabulous effort. On Sunday 8/9 Matt Metz does all that he can on the bump but the A's plate 2 in the 1st inning on their way to a 4-2 win that clinch's it. Great season boys as runner-up Champions and division winners with a 16-4 regular season record! Long Island Astros 18U Boys of Summer team win their quarterfinal playoff game versus LI Cobras on Tuesday 8/11 by the score of 11-3 as Mike Sorbara smashes 2 HR's and Kevin Primm sets the tone early with a 1st inning 3 run blast. The Astros don't fare well in their semifinal playoff as we drop an 8-2 decision to Paveco Black who then continue on and defeat the LI Sound in the Championship game on Wednesday 8/12. Congratulations to the LI Astros on another successful summer season in the Boys of Summer League. Long Island Astros 18U compete in NABF qualifier in Nassau County 7/23 - 7/25 hosted by NJBL. The Astros battled hard and get off to a great start with wins over the Team NY Cardinals (12-4) and Titans (3-1) on Thursday 7/23. The team then faces the Midville Dodgers on Friday 7/24 and lose a hard fought ballgame by the score of 5-2 as the Dodgers tack on 3 runs in the 5th & 6th innings after the Astros tie it up with 2 runs in the top half of the 5th inning. Needing a win to avoid elimination the Astros win their afternoon game on Friday by defeating the Titans by the score of 4-1 and setting up a Saturday Championship game versus the Midville Dodgers with the winner heading off to the NABF World Series in Jackson, Mississippi. The Saturday game is scoreless thru 3 when Midville plates 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Dodgers play flawlessly from there and beat us 4-1 earning the NABF qualifier Championship and the right to participate in the World Series. A job well done by Greg Modica and his talented club, congratulation to them and a job well done by our boys albeit just a bit short.

Astros 2008 17U team also participated in the LI Connie Mack 18U division. 2008 Long Island Astros are Tournament Champions 3 times, semi-finalists in the Boys of Summer league and either semi or quarter finalists in 3 other events while also attending the NABF World Series in Lynchburg, VA. In 2008 the Long Island Astros 17U team wins 55 of their 82 games played and are featured in a National magazine for their accomplishments, we look to continue our success in 2009!!! Zach is brilliant on the mound in his complete game victory surrendering single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings while also adding an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Jared Mancini delivers a clutch 2 out single in the 3rd inning to tie the game at 2 and then Mike Sorbara delivers the game winning pinch hit double with 2 out in the 5th inning to put the Astros out in front to stay. The 2007 Astros 16U BOS team finish the season in 3rd place with an outstanding record of 20-9 versus the toughest competition on Long Island! The Astros LICM team also have an outstanding season and finish up in 2nd place overall with a 19-4 record as we lose in the semi-final round of the playoffs. It was a great summer of baseball and all the boys performed marvelously! Thanks goes out to Coach Phil Lenz for all his help this summer as well as to Coach Steve Malin. Thanks to all the parents and the boys who endured and met all the necessary requirements in what was a very successful summer of baseball. The Astros "Boys of Summer" All-Stars (pictured below) shine at Citibank Park on Saturday night (8/18/07) as Ryan Rusoff, PJ Lenz and Cam Maron (left to right) lead their team to an 8-4 victory! PJ is the winning pitcher with a perfect 1-2-3 inning on the mound while driving home 2 runs with a mammoth double. Ryan Rusoff singles home 2 runs and plays solid D at SS & 2B while Cam Maron singles home a run as well!!! NICE!!! Our boys drive home 5 of the 8 runs and represent the Long Island Astros team superbly! (Our 4th All-Star, Max Tecce, was unable to attend)
The Astros spring season comes to an end on Sunday 5/20/07 as our walking wounded limp home and split versus the LI Diamondbacks. We close the books on our 2007 spring season with an 8-4 record and 2nd place finish as the LI Eagles decline our offer to makeup our rainout which would have determined the division winner. Spring 2007 highlights - Junior Fair wins 5 out of our 8 games and provides the Astros with a solid pitching performance each and every time out there, GREAT job Junior! Ryan Rusoff who goes down with an elbow injury after 5 games leads the universe in hitting with a .571 average, shares the team lead in 2B's and leads in slugging & OBP, WAY TO GO RYAN! PJ Lenz leads the big club with an ASTOUNDING 20 RBI in 12 games AND also notches 3 saves while dominating on the mound! NICE! Captain Cam Maron is the club leader in runs, hits, and 2B's while also leading his Hicksville Varsity team to a #1 seed in the Nassau Cty. playoff AND is named to the ALL CONFERENCE TEAM! Great accomplishment Cam! Max Tecce plays ALL-WORLD at SS while Dylan Harmon (team leader in BB's / second in batting), Zach Root (second in batting), Ethan Peck (second in RBI) and Vinnie Carminati play solid baseball in every aspect as well.
