NJBL Memorial Day Tournament results & boxscores - Sat. 5/29 & Sun. 5/30

The Astros played competitive baseball over the Memorial Day weekend tournament but failed to win a game in 4 tries. Tournament highlights included a sparkling pitching performance from Justin Neuwirt in game one who threw 6 scoreless innings before a 7th  inning error allowed in 3 unearned runs. Junior Fair threw a combined 11 innings over the weekend and kept the Astros close while also leading the team with 4 hits. Our overall defense sparkled as we were particularly strong up the middle where Matt Malley, Ryan Rusoff and Mike Sciortino made all the plays.

Justin Neuwirt pitched a masterful game while holding the Baymen scoreless for 6 innings, a key error in the 7th inning allowed the Baymen to score all they needed to seal the victory. The Astros only managed 4 hits as David Bernardi (2B), Mike Sciortino (3 SB's), Ryan Rusoff and Junior Fair accounted for all the offense in this great defensive pitchers duel.

Game 2 - Youth Services 8 Astros 2

Astros were outscored early by a very talented team who looked like varsity HS players! After our early inning difficulty Junior Fair kept the Youth Service team under wraps and we played them evenly for the vast majority of the game. At the dish TJ Arsenault had an RBI single and Mike Sciortino, Matt Malley, David Bernardi, Ryan Rusoff (2B), Etan Peck and Michael Anderson all had hits.

Game 3 - Blue Demons 9 Astros 1

Blue Demons hit the ball to all parts of the field and displayed excellent skills in their situational hitting. Zach Root got off to a rough start on the rubber before recovering and regaining his composure, Michael Anderson and Matt Malley combined for 3 scorless innings of relief. Astros couldn't generate any offense versus the Blue Demon arms as an RBI single by David Bernardi was the only productive hit in the ballgame.

Game 4 - NY Gothams 7 Astros 3

Another tough tough tough team!! The Astros fell behind early, kept the Gotham scoreless middle and late and chipped away with a few runs to make it respectable. Junior Fair pitched a commendable ballgame while also adding 2 hits and an RBI. Zach Root hit the ball hard and was robbed of 2 hits while adding a single for good measure. On the defense our outfielders ran down baseballs all day as Dan Levine and Mike Sciortino played flawlessly while Ryan Rusoff and Matt Malley play strong up the middle versus a heavy hitting talented team.
